Using large movie files in a course
Storing a large movie in the database places an excessive load on the server when many learners view it, so it may be better to store large movie files outside the course and link to them using a Flash asset on the required slide.
There are two ways that can be used to link to an external movie file:
1. Open the movie in a new window
Create a storage directory on your Internet or Intranet and place the movie file there. This must be accessible by all users of the course.
Place a Button asset (http://www.atlantic-link.co.uk/flash_templates.htm > Flash movies > Buttons) on the slide and use the TargetURL property of the Button to link to the movie file. This will open the movie in a new browser window.
2. Show the movie in the course
Convert the movie to the Flash video (FLV) format (http://www.download.com/Riva-FLV-Encoder/3000-2140_4-10320097.html?cdlPid=10381392 is a free application to do this). The FLV format is the best choice for streaming long movies over a network.
Create a storage directory on your Internet or Intranet and place the movie file there. This must be accessible by all users of the course.
Then place the FLVPlayer asset (http://www.atlantic-link.co.uk/flash_templates.htm > Flash movies > Media players ) on a slide and set the TargetURL property to the URL of the FLV file.
The movie will appear on the slide.
